Brazil, like many countries in the world, has its own rules for the import of pet animals, such as dogs and cats. In this article you will find important information regarding the subject.
Preparing before departure
Brazil’s requirements are not hard to meet. In fact, compared to other countries,  they are pretty simple. But it’s important to meet all the requirements.
- The animal must have been vaccinated against rabies (at least 30 days before the departure and not after 1 year) and have the apropriate certificate
- It’s not mandatory to have an ISO microchip implant, but it’s recommended, for easy identification
- An International Health Certificate, must be issued by the veterinary authorities from the country of export
- In the past, the International Health Certificate should be legalized in the Brazilain Consulate. Since August 2009, though, it’s NOT necessary anymore (except for countries that require the consulate stamp too, like Qatar, Kuwait, Niger, Tanzania, Egypt, Kenya, Syria, Turkey and some others), according to this new piece of legislation.
- The difference between the date of issue of the International Health Certificate and the date of arrival should not be longer than 10 days
- There’s NO need of an import permit for the entry of dogs and cats. It may be necessary (and probably will) for other species.
Customs clearance
The Brazilian importation laws are very confusing and complex, and although it’s not required to hire a professional cargo agent to help in customs clearance, it’s highly recommended that you’d do so.
Brazil has very high taxes on importing animals. Pet animals arriving in Brazil should pay a tax of 60% of the the air freight value, plus another tax of 60% of the estimated monetary value of the animal (this value is estimated based on age and breed of the dog). Normally, puppies and kittens are valued at US$800 and adult animals (1 year old+) are estimated as US$200. Remember that these may vary wildly.
Tax exemption or reduction is possible if:
- The pet owner is a foreigner coming to work in Brazil
